جب ساری تعلیم اردو میں ہوتی تھی

آج کوئی مشکل ہی سے یقین کرے گا کہ جب بڑے علاقے پر انگریزوں کی حاکمیت قائم ہوگئی اور جدید علوم کی، جنہیں آپ چاہیں مغربی علوم کہہ لیں، تعلیم شروع ہوئی تو سارے مضامین اردو میں پڑھائے جاتے تھے۔ کیا سائنس، کیا ریاضی، کیا انجینئرنگ اور کیا زبانیں، سب اردو میں پڑھائی جاتی تھیں۔اس سلسلے میں دہلی کالج اور حیدرآباد دکن میں جو بے مثال کام ہوا ، دنیا اسے بھول چلی ہے جس کا دکھ ہوتا ہے۔ جب سارے علاقے میں عوام کی بہبود کے تعمیراتی کام شروع ہوئے تو سو دو سو نہیں، ہزاروں انجینئروں کی ِضرورت پڑی۔ ماہروں کی اتنی بڑی فوج انگلستان سے لانا ممکن نہ تھا۔ تب انگریزوں نے ہمالیہ کے دامن میں چھوٹے سے شہر روڑکی میں ایک بڑا اور جدید سول انجینئرنگ کالج قائم کیا۔ سڑکیں اور نہریں بنانے اور عمارتیں او رتار کا نظام قائم کرنے کے لئے ہندوستانی لڑکوں کو اردو میں تعلیم دینے کا فیصلہ کیا گیا۔ اس مقصد کے لئے ماہرین کی خدمات حاصل کر کے ان مضامین کی نصابی کتابوں کا اردو میں ترجمہ کرایا گیا۔ کالج میں اردو طباعت کا چھاپہ خانہ لگایا گیا اور اس طرح یہ بڑا کام چل نکلا۔

یہاں جی چاہتا ہے اس داستان کے کچھ دل چسپ پہلو بیان کئے جائیں۔سب سے پہلے دیسی ہیڈ ماسٹر مقرر کئے گئے۔ ریکارڈ میں ان کے نام ملتے ہیں: مُنّو لال،رام چندر،مدھو سُدن چٹر جی اور بہاری لال۔اسی طرح نائب ماسٹروں میں مسیح اﷲ، عبدالرحمان، اکبر بیگ، مودود حسین، فصیح الدین، تجمل حسین، رحیم بخش، عبدالغنی اور شیخ بیچا کے نام بھی ملتے ہیں۔یہ سلسلہ سنہ 1847سے 1871 تک جاری رہا۔ان میں کچھ سروے کے استاد تھے اور کچھ ڈرائنگ کے (میرے والد بھی نئی صدی کے آغاز میں ڈرائنگ ماسٹر ہی تھے)،شیخ بیچاتخمینے کے مضمون کے استاد تھے اور سترہ سال تک لڑکوں کو ایسٹیمیٹ پڑھاتے رہے۔

تھامسن انجینئرنگ کالج روڑکی میں کتابیں لکھنے اور چھاپنے کے کام پر آج کے اسکا لروں نے کافی تحقیق کی ہے۔بعض نے لکھا ہے کہ شروع میں ساری تعلیم لڑکوں کو انگریزی زبان میں دی جاتی تھی۔ مگر ہمارے پیش نظر کتاب کے مصنف ساجد صدیق نظامی نے بڑے وثوق سے لکھا ہے کہ یہ دونوں باتیں درست نہیں ۔ سچ تو یہ ہے کہ پہلے دن سے ہندوستانی لڑکوں کی تعلیم ہوئی اور ان کی نصابی کتابیں اردو ہی میں چھاپی جارہی تھیں۔ کالج کا اپنا چھاپہ خانہ سنہ 1850 کے آس پاس کام شروع کرچکا تھا۔یہ بھی لکھا گیا ہے کہ انجینئرنگ جیسے مضمون کی کتابیں ترجمہ کرنے کے لئے کالج میں ایک ترجمہ کمیٹی بھی مقرر کی گئی تھی۔کسی نے لکھا ہے کہ آزادی تک کالج میں مسلمانوں کا داخلہ تقریباً نا ممکن تھا۔ مگر کالج کے ایک پرانے کیلنڈرمیں سنہ 1872تک داخل ہونے والے لڑکوں کی مکمل فہرستیں ملتی ہیںجن سے معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ ہندو اور مسلمان طلبا کی تعداد تقریباً برابر تھی۔کالج کے قیام سے 1870تک ہندوستانی لڑکوں کو سارے مضمون اردو میں ہی پڑھائے جاتے تھے۔ اُس وقت جدید مضامین پر کچھ کتابیں دستیاب تھیں لیکن سول انجینئرنگ کی نصابی کتابوں کا کسی نے ترجمہ نہیں کیا تھا۔تحقیق سے پتہ چلتا ہے کہ اس موضوع پر بنیادی کتابوں کا ترجمہ روڑکی ہی میں شروع ہوا۔پہلے پہلے یہ کتابیں سکندرہ (آگرہ) کے آرفن پریس میں چھپتی تھیں، بعد میں کالج کا اپنا چھاپہ خانہ قائم ہوگیا۔

کالج کی زیادہ تر کتابیں دو استادوں نے ترجمہ کیں، وہ تھے منو لال اور بہاری لال۔ دونوں نے چھ چھ کتابیں اردو میں ڈھالیں۔ باقی کتابیں تیار کرنے والوں میں کنہیا لال، شنبھو داس اور شیخ بیچا کے نام شامل ہیں۔منو لال دہلی کے کائستھ تھے ۔ ان کے والد سوہن لال کو1857کی بغاوت میں انگریزوں کی مدد کے صلے میں بلند شہر کے تین گاؤں جاگیر کے طور پر ملے تھے۔خود منولال نے پہلے آگرہ کے انگلش اسکول میں تعلیم پائی جہاں سے وہ روڑکی آگئے اور تعلیم پوری کرکے یہیں پڑھانے لگے۔اسی دوران حیدرآباد دکن سے سالارجنگ نے روڑکی کالج کے پرنسپل کو لکھا کہ انہیں انجینئرنگ کے ایک استاد کی ضرورت ہے، جس پر منو لال کو وہاں بھیج دیا گیا۔ وہ حیدرآباد انجینئرنگ کالج کے نائب سربراہ مقرر ہوئے۔منولال نے حیدر آباد میں اینگلو ورنا کیولرگرلز اسکول قائم کیا جہاں 1885 میں پچاس ہندو او رچھبیس مسلمان لڑکیا ں تعلیم پا رہی تھیں۔تین سال بعد منو لال کی وفات ہوئی۔

دوسرے مصنف لالہ بہاری لا ل ہیں جو شروع ہی سے استاد کی حیثیت سے کام کر رہے تھے۔ انہوں نے سات کتابیں لکھیں۔اگلے مصنف کنہیا لال ہیں جن کی کتاب ًتاریخ پنجاب‘ آج تک یاد کی جاتی ہے۔وہ 1830 میں ایٹہ یو پی میں پیدا ہوئے ۔ ثانوی درجات کی تعلیم آگرہ میں پائی جس کے بعد روڑکی میں داخلہ لیا۔ تعلیم پوری کرنے پر لاہور میں سب اسسٹنٹ سول انجینئر مقرر ہوئے اور آخر وہیں ریٹائر ہوئے۔لاہور کا ریلوے اسٹیشن اور میو اسپتال ان ہی کی نگرانی میں تعمیر ہوا۔بہت کتابیں لکھیں جن میں گلزار ہندی، یادگار ہندی ، ظفر نامہ معروف بہ رنجیت نامہ، مناجا ت ہندی، اخلاق ہندی، تاریخ پنجاب اور تاریخ لاہور آج تک حوالے کے طور پر نظر آتی ہیں۔بعد میں کالج میں ان کے نام سے ایک انعام بھی جاری ہوا تھا۔ان کی انجینئرنگ کی کتابوں میں ’رسالہ در باب آلات پیمائش ‘ قابل ذکر ہے۔سڑکوں یا نہروں کی تعمیر میں بڑا موڑ آجائے تو کیا کرنا چاہئے، تفصیل سے بتایا گیا ہے۔اسی کتاب میں ایک جگہ ایسی بھی آتی ہے کہ’’جب کبھی ایسا اتفاق آپڑتا ہے کہ سڑک کی سیدھ میں کوئی گاؤں یا اچھا باغ یا کوئی مکان کہ جس کے گرادینے میں بہت نقصان ہوتا ہو، آجاتا ہے تو اس وقت گاؤں یا مکان کو کیسے بچانا چاہئے‘‘۔

اُس زمانے اور اُن لوگوں کے گزر جانے کے بعد حالات نے ایسی کروٹ بدلی کہ کچھ بھی پہلا جیسا نہ رہا ورنہ ہم تصور کر سکتے ہیں کہ یوں بھی ہوتا کہ ہم اور ہمارے بچے دنیا کا ہر مضمون اپنی زبان میں پڑھ رہے ہوتے اور جب پڑھ رہے ہوتے تو انہیں اچھی طرح معلوم ہوتا کہ کیا پڑھ رہے ہیں۔

اب تو یہ کسی دیوانے کا خواب لگتا ہے۔
